You guys, it’s officially May which means that summer’s right around the corner! What do you guys have planned? Anything exciting? I’ll be doing a bunch of traveling with my 4 month old (wish me luck), but despite the craziness, I’m dead-set on making this the best summer yet!
So if you’re like me and just LOVE the summer time, then today’s post is definitely for you.
Here are 7 things you absolutely HAVE TO DO to make this summer is your most memorable one yet!
Set recurring friend dates
There’s something about college dorms that makes hanging out so easy and casual. You just bump into each other and instantly it’s like, “hey – let’s go do something.” But as you get older, hanging out with your friends gets a little harder and honestly, it takes a lot more effort to see each other. Hence why your friend count tends to go down post-college. So sad.
So this summer, make it a point to see your friends by setting a recurring friend date – every Thursday get coffee at the same place, same time. Or every Sunday wake up and meet your friends at the farmer’s market and then relax over brunch. The details aren’t nearly as important as doing it regularly! (Oh by the way, looking to make new friends? Read on!)
Be spontaneous and seek adventure
I think adventure is a feeling more than anything. Sometimes a weird dare when you’re in a goofy mood can feel as adventurous as stepping off a plane in a new country. Maybe you want to take a spontaneous road trip to the next town over, or just talk to the interesting couple in the corner booth. Follow your excitement in the moment and don’t be afraid to get a little weird.
What is it about vacation that gives us permission to lean back and enjoy the beach or the bustling new city we’re in? You can create these moments at home this summer by simply carving out time to do … well, nothing at all. Give yourself permission to be lazy, to fall asleep with a book or spend the day laying around at the park.
Meet New People
Whether you have a ton of close friends or wouldn’t mind making a few more – meeting new people is without a doubt one of the best ways to energize your summer. Introduce yourself as you bump into people at bars, wineries, coffee shops, and farmer’s markets and start talking as if you’re already friends: “Wow, have you ever seen tomatoes this big?”
Sometimes meeting new people can be a little awkward. That’s where I think a friendship app comes in. For example, the free app We3 will match you in groups of 3 people based on a magical algorithm for compatibility. It’s for friendship only (no dating), so it may be a great way to meet new people this summer and share the memories you’re about to make.
Get Out of Your Routine
There’s nearly an infinite amount of things you could do this summer, and if you’re anything like me you’ll probably gravitate to what you already know. So do something different this summer. Get out of your element. Check out this list of 50 things to do this summer, for a few ideas that’ll help you mix things up.
Deepen your friendships
After a long day of hiking or between cocktails at the bar, sometimes there are moments when we have the opportunity to get to know each other better. Lean in and don’t be afraid to say something vulnerable or ask about something important if the moment is right. We’re all secretly yearning for deeper connections with others, and that’s what friendship’s all about, right?
Stop Trying So Hard
Think about summers when you were a kid – everything was awesome! You didn’t need to try so hard back then, you just knew that at that very moment you were going to smell every flower in the yard, roll around in the grass, and then fall asleep without a care.
The true key to a great summer is to let go of creating something perfect and enjoy the simplicities of the sun, great friends, and the beautiful outdoors. I know, it’s corny, but give it a try – put down your plans and ideas about your day, and see what happens.
