Hi everyone! Hope you guys had a great weekend!! Today we’ve got another Career Series post, so we’ll get right to that since my cat is being annoying and has decided that he wants to plant himself right on my laptop and is preventing me from writing a super-cool intro…
So here’s Arianna! She’s an FIU graduate like me, so she’s instantly awesome in my book.
What did you want to be when you were growing up and why?
Growing up I wanted to be an architect. I thought I wanted to construct a whole city or country. In High School I was in a design and architecture program and I quickly realized that architecture wasn’t for me and I was not as much of a perfectionist as I thought I was.
What is your current job?
I graduated with a bachelor in Marketing and I now work as a Marketing Coordinator at a network security company. It’s more fun than it sounds!
How did you land that position? (What made you want to pursue that?)
I graduated from school in Miami and moved to Houston, so all the networking I had done in Miami did not help me here in Houston. I had to look for a recruiter. Luckily, it was quick. I interviewed at two different jobs and chose the one I am currently in. It is a company with a small marketing team which in my case it is great. Why? Because I get to put my hands on projects that I wouldn’t have had the chance to do in a bigger marketing department.
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
A typical day at work is very different to me every single day. In general and depending on the month I plan ahead the content that will be displayed on our brochures, blog, website, case studies, white papers etc. Our company also attends tradeshows and those can consume your agenda. I need to take care of logistics, promotional items, tradeshow materials, ideas for giveaways and plan on how to acquire customers. Once that is done, the most important part of marketing is showing the fruits of our marketing efforts. So following up on classifying our leads and eventually having our sales team close deals. Then it all starts again.
What do you love most about it?
What I love the most about it is that I get to work on something different everyday and I get to be creative everyday.
What do you hate most about it?
I sometimes hate that some people don’t understand the importance of marketing. It’s almost like we work behind the scenes for the Sales team. But everywhere you look, marketing is happening.
What’s the coolest thing that ever happened to you at work?
The coolest thing about my job is that sometimes I get to travel to tradeshows 🙂 Any time they offer me to send me somewhere, you better believe I do not hesitate! I get to meet people, see a new city and see the fruits of my marketing efforts.
What strengths do you think are necessary for someone to be successful at this job?
I believe creativity is important. But most of all, time management. Sometimes I am given multiple things to work on at the same time. But it is a matter of prioritizing the projects and having them all done by the time due. Organization is also key.
What’s the best piece of advice you can give someone who’s looking to pursue this as a career?
You have got to find something where you are not only benefiting a business, but something that is also benefiting you. So find what you like to do, and then think how that trait/strength/skill can help a business or even help your own business one day.
