Book Update Week #1 + A Pretty Cool Contest That Could Land You A Spot In My Book

Millennial Career Advice

Hi guys!! Okay, so if you don’t know already, I’m writing a book.

Yep! It’s totally happening!

I landed a book deal with a local publishing company here in Miami, and if all goes well, I should see my book in stores this coming June.

LOL when my editor told me that, I almost laughed at him.

Like, for real???

My book’s going to be in a store??

Like, on a shelf somewhere?

I don’t exactly know, but hey…I’ll take it!!!

I’ve had this book in mind for the past three years, so I’m beyond excited that I get to work on it and that in just a few short months, other people might actually want to read it!

So what’s my book about??

Come on, guys! What do you THINK it’s about??

It’s about millennials surviving the corporate world!

It’s about millennials being smart so they can have kick-ass careers!

I’m proud to announce the preliminary title for my book:

Corporate Survival Guide For Your Twenties.

That’s it!

Now what’s it going to be like?

I’ll tell you what it WON’T be like.

It won’t be like reading a textbook.

It won’t be like reading lame articles.

There won’t be five hundred million statistics, and there won’t be tons of fancy big words.

It’s going to be a no-BS guide to surviving your first few years in the workplace.

Because there’s so much about corporate life that we’re never taught in college!

We’re just thrown off the boat, and expected to swim!

So I’m gunna do my best to give some brutally honest advice to anyone who’s willing to listen.

Here’s some of the stuff I’l be covering:

-Getting your boss to like you

-Staying sane despite your 945 e-mails Monday morning

-Not killing your coworkers who drive you freaking crazy

And I’ll even explain why you NEVER eat someone else’s food from the employee fridge!

I cannot WAIT to see what it looks like when it’s all done! And since I love you all dearly, and you guys keep me on point, I’ll be publishing periodic updates to let you know how I’m doing.

As of right now, my table of contents is all outlined, and my first chapter’s complete.

I’m working SO HARD to make sure that the book’s all done by the first week of November, because if I’m stressing about finishing my book while at my wedding, my mother will kill me.

So that’s the timeline I’m sticking to.

1 chapter down, 9 more to go.

Last week I put together my author bio, which is never an easy thing to do. It’s like, what the heck do I say about myself??

Hi, I’m Kayla. I love my cat. I love Nutella. The end.

That just about sums up my life.

But no, I couldn’t really submit that, so I had to come up with something slightly fancier.

And then this week I’ve got to work on my dedication, and I have to figure out who’s going to write the foreword to my book. I’ve got a couple really awesome peeps in mind, so I’m hoping that at least one of them will give me the time of day.

But here’s where you guys come in!!!

I pitched this idea to my publishing team, and they absolutely LOVED IT!

The book’s about giving advice to young professionals out there who can really use all the help they can get.

We all have experiences, no matter what age, and there’s so much we can learn from each other.

So I’d like to include advice from YOU GUYS in my book as well!

All I need are the best 2-4 sentences you’ve got! 2-4 sentences of the VERY BEST CAREER ADVICE you have to offer.

Submit them to me HERE, and 10-20 submissions will be selected to be included in my book!

You, your name, your advice, your blog name even!

How cool would that be??

I KNOW I don’t know everything, so I’m really counting on you guys to share your thoughts here.

People are gunna read this book (at least my mom will) and I want them to get the most out of it!

So don’t be shy!

What advice do you wish someone would have given you during your first few weeks of work?

What lessons did you learn by falling flat on your face?

And what awesome stuff have you done that you’ve found to be really effective in reaching your career goals?

TELL ME PLEASE. We’re looking forward to reading some awesome responses!

Anyway, that’s about it!

Hope you’ll follow me along on this crazy ride, because yea, I love my mom, but if she’s the only person who reads my book, I’m totally gunna cry.

Have a great weekend everyone!

xoxoxxo, Kayla

This is wonderful news and I’m so thrilled for you! I however do not have a “job” so I cannot help you out with such advice but if I did, it’d be to exude confidence but not act boastful. 🙂 Be approachable and ask questions always. You’ll never get fired for asking a question. 🙂 I love the list of books on blogging- saving to favs for later, thanks!

Congratulations on the book deal lovely. That is absolutely massive and it’s so inspiring to me that you appear to be living the life I am working at building for myself. It’s so nice to have you as a trailblazer – now I know that it actually *is* all possible!

There is so much I would have told my 20 year old self before stepping foot into my first full time position. If I could go back in time I definitely would have done a few things differently. I will have a hard think and submit to the link you provided.

    Thanks for the beautiful opportunity!
