Joe and I have been in our new house for almost a year now (how crazy is that?) and since we’re officially grown ups, we’re looking forward to doing a lot of entertaining over the next couple of months.
As excited as we are though, outdoor entertaining is a first for us. Up until we moved into our new home we never really had a backyard, so outdoor entertaining was never our thing. But now we DO have a yard, and I can’t tell you how excited we are to get it all fixed up!
Since I’ve been doing some research lately, I thought I’d share my 7 must-haves for outdoor entertaining. Here’s what I’ve decided we can’t live without.
There’s something about outdoor patio string lights that I absolutely adore. They’re romantic, warm, and welcoming, and can instantly transform the atmosphere of your backyard. I think these look really pretty along fences and pretty much anywhere, so you better believe we’ll be putting these babies up all over the place! Oh, and you can also try making your own Tiki Lights! I bet those would look really cool too.
I kill any plant that I touch. There’s no denying it. I don’t have a green thumb at all, so this one’s going to be all Joe! One of the things we really want to focus on is putting together some nice landscaping, but I’ve been reading up on this landscaping stuff and I’ve decided that I want to greenscape instead! Turns out you can make some eco-friendly choices about your yard and they’re really not that hard to implement. Can’t wait to get started!
If you’re not going to have comfy furniture for people to sit on, you might as well hit pause on the whole outdoor-entertaining thing. I mean, who wants to go to a get together and not have anywhere comfy to sit? You want people to be cozy and comfortable so that they’ll be able to chat and have a good time. Joe and I are definitely going to be looking into some patio furniture and it’s looking like Target will be our first stop. Loving this set at the moment.
Easy To Use Grill
What’s an outdoor party without a grill, huh? That’s what I thought… If you’re entertaining outdoors then you 100% need a grill, and thankfully, this is one thing that Joe and I already have. We actually have a smoker, but any easy-to-use grill will do. It’s a great way to cook tons of food for your guests while giving your oven a break. And if you’re looking to keep your grilling as eco-friendly as possible too, then here are some tips you may want to consider.
Giant Drink Dispenser
If you’re going to be doing any entertaining outside, it’s important to keep you and your guests hydrated! So whether you’re serving nice cold lemon water or sangria, you’ll want to have a giant drink dispenser handy! We got one of these for our wedding and I’m dying to try it out!
Fun Plates, Napkins, and Utensils
The plates I use on a regular basis are all white. And maybe that’s a bit boring, but I like them that way! However, when entertaining outside, I want my plates and cutlery to be super festive! I want my guests to know that they’re part of a special event, so I’ll be buying myself some fun dinnerware sets like this one.
Something To Get Rid of Mosquitos
I live in Miami, AKA mosquito central, and I definitely don’t want to be entertaining guests outside if they’re going to get eaten alive. That’s not fun. In order to spend time outside, I’ll have to buy some heavy-duty citronella candles and pretty much anything else I can think of to get rid of mosquitos. That way, we can all enjoy ourselves, mosquito bite free. Heck, I’ll even consider a mosquito net! Whatever works!
And that’s it! What do you think? Did I leave anything out? Feel free to share any outdoor entertaining tips with us because #adulting is hard and we’re just trying to make it look like we know what we’re doing.
