Joe and I love to travel. We actually just got back from celebrating our one-year wedding anniversary in Key West and we loved every second of it!
But since we love to travel so much, over the past couple of months I’ve been a lot more organized and thoughtful when it comes to traveling with jewelry. Because as a newlywed, I can’t even begin to tell you how absolutely heartbroken I’d be if something happened to my wedding rings!
There’d be crying for days, and it wouldn’t be pretty.
So today I thought I’d share a few of my favorite tips for keeping your jewelry safe, because the holidays are coming up, and I know a lot of you will soon be packing those suitcases! Hope these help you out a bit!
1. Make A List
I can’t tell you how many pairs of earrings I’ve left in hotel rooms. I guess it’s an easy thing to do, considering that I’m always in a hurry come check-out time. So how can you avoid this? It’s real simple – make a list or take photos of all the jewelry you pack, so you can check for each piece before heading home. It’ll probably take a few minutes, but it’ll save you from forgetting your favorite pair of studs.
2. Keep Everything In A Safe Place
Whenever I’m traveling, I keep all of my jewelry in a box and as soon as I get to my hotel room, that box goes straight into the safe. Because as much as I’d like to think that all hotel workers are nice people, I’m not really willing to take that chance. So make sure your valuables are kept in the safe when you’re not using them and if you’re flying, NEVER put jewelry in checked bags. Wear them or keep them in your carry-on.
3. Don’t Wear Jewelry To The Beach
This is the one tip that I have a hard time with because I never take my wedding rings off. I sleep with my rings, shower with my rings, workout with my rings…they NEVER come off. But while I was snorkeling in the Dry Tortugas this past week, I had SO MUCH anxiety! I kept thinking about how easy it would be for me to lose my rings in the ocean and never get them back. I think I actually spent more time looking at my left hand than at the fish around me, so if I had to do it over again, I would have just left them in the safe back in the hotel room. Would have been so much easier.
4. Flip Your Engagement Ring
When you’re traveling and you’re in a place that you’re not too familiar with, the last thing you want to do is draw attention to yourself. You don’t want to walk around the street flashing a Rolex and a 4 ct. diamond because that makes you a pretty good target for thieves looking to take advantage of tourists. So if you’re feeling a little uneasy in your surroundings, turn over the diamond on your finger and make it look like a simple band. It literally takes one second and could make your traveling a lot safer.
5. Insure It
No matter how careful you are with your jewelry when traveling, stuff happens, and that’s why there’s jewelery insurance. Because if you have major anxiety issues like me, you want to make sure that your jewelry is properly protected no matter what. Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company has been insuring jewelry for more than 100 years and they offer repair or replacement coverage protecting your jewelry regardless of whether it becomes lost, stolen, damaged or mysteriously disappears. You can travel anywhere in the world with the peace of mind that no matter what kind of accident happens to you jewelry, you’ll be able to fix it! And that, my friends, is totally worth it!
So keep these tips in mind while you’re traveling, because aint nobody got time for lost or stolen jewelry! Am I right?! Any other tips you want to share with us? Let us know in the comments!
