Here’s a little bit about me. Read it, or die. JK 😀

I graduated college at the age of 20 with a degree in Health Services Administration and worked at a large hospital as a secretary in the Executive Office.

I’m currently working as a Contract Administrator in a large Supply Chain department and last year I received my Master’s Degree in Public Administration specializing in Human Resources.

Working in an Executive Office, I was constantly exposed to important HR concepts like leadership development, talent management, and employee engagement. I was also exposed to a lot of Corporate BS. Today, I find myself most passionate about helping young professionals navigate through their first few years as twenty-somethings in the work force.

So that’s my goal.

Being a Millennial in today’s work force is NOT easy. Anyone who thinks so is clearly unaware of the challenges we face on a daily basis. It’s  my opinion that recent grads today are in fact more lost than other generations have been in the past.  But I also believe that it’s our responsibility to empower them.

Why? Because we’re awesome. And we bring a lot to the table. And if employers can learn to embrace the changes and ideas that we bring to the table, the world will be a happier place.

So that’s what Gen Y Girl is about. Sharing. Learning. Improving. Ensuring that we are best equipped to be the leaders of tomorrow.

    I like your blog’s articles so far. I truely believe that we need to change the way we (as Gen X business professionals) look at the Gen Y entrants into the workforce and find better ways to manage and motivate them. It has been on my mind for the last year and I finally started putting thoughts into words and finally into type on a blog I started last week.

      Thanks so much for the support! I’m truly glad you feel that way. Embracing this change is a win-win situation for both Gen Y entrants and their employers. Both parties need to work together to ensure that their needs as well as the overall goals of the organizations they belong to are being met. But the only way to do that is to understand that some conventional HR practices may need to be revisited. Let’s think outside the box a little bit. And I’m sure that if more leaders do this, they’ll find that Gen Y workers bring with them so many talents that are invaluable to their organizations.

As for your conference, I checked it out yesterday but I couldn’t attend because I was at this oh so wonderful thing called my day job. But it looked fascinating!         I can send you my notes if you’d like, but after next week (I’m doing the same presentation live to several hundred here in Austin), I will post it to my blog. Just don’t want to post it until after I’ve done the live presentation of it. Had a great group listen in virtually today though!

        We might need to team up on some things in the future – I’m that Gen X guy and we could look at topics from two different perspectives and brainstorm some things out.

    What a wonderful young woman you are! Brave and thoughtful enough to share yourself with the world. I have a challenge for you. As you begin your life in the working world, why not look at each position from an entrepreneurial viewpoint. How would you run the department or company if it was yours? Not only will you have amazing ideas, but you will begin to see that you can create your own job or company… which is something I strongly suggest for you in the future. Keep going, you are doing great!

    Do you know the difference between milennial YGens and the rest of us?

    You have the guts to speak the truth as you see it!

    That’s why you are ‘difficult, thorny, self absorbed, mutlitasking, overly-confident upstarts’ – and your bosses are scared to death of you!

    As one of the early ‘prototypes’ of the YGen model (sandwiched and hidden at the end of the Baby Boomers and before the XGen) I empathise completely and helped grow my child into a great example of the YGen who is taking on the world on his terms.

    Keep going!

    Life is messy and change can hurt but vision gets us through.

    Amen. Amen. Amen. I was def. lost as hell when I graduated in the thick of the recession in May of 2010. I am still inspired by hearing how many people use their skills to work for themselves, how they are not slaves to any corporation but I don’t think everyone is meant to be an entrepreneur. You’ve definitely had some major accomplishments, can’t wait to read some inspiring info!

    Kayla, we can all learn from each other. As a Baby Boomer and heading into my latter years (though no plan on ever retiring), I think we can all work together to help make this world a better place… I’m glad to see that you’re focused on not only improving the world, you also continue to want to learn. That’s important. Heck, I got my Ph.D. later in life and continue to challenge myself to grow.

    I wish you success throughout your life and bring on your wonderful viewpoint and freshness into the workplace and beyond. Old paradigms need to be challenged. That’s what my generation did 40+ years ago and now pass the torch to yours. Now, do it!

    Your blog has given me food for thought though! As it turns out, I have been hired for the very reason that I’m a generation Y-er amongst generation X-ers and baby boomers in the department. We’re a Careers Service for the University of Hull in England and my blog is a product of that mindset – appealing to fellow generation Y students.

    Having just posted a response on my blog relating to generations…I was so happy to see your email that you have become a follower. Thank you for that. I am fascinated with the dynamics of each new generation that emerges and interested in the struggles therein. I am technically a Baby Boomer, but I cannot truly say I identify with them. I tend to think myself more a Gen Xer, with children in the Gen Y sector. I know first hand (well, perhaps second hand) of which you speak for I see parallels between your experiences and my children’s. I look forward to following your blog, welcome comments on my own (you must keep us Gen Xers on our toes) and wish you all the best.

    I agree with the Gen X thing. I graduated about 5 years ago and have a career. But I STILL feel lost and “searching”. I don’t feel like what I’m doing is me but after all that schooling – and money (really it’s the money) – I don’t have much room for big change now. I know people will say “Yes you can!” – but that’s not realistic. No, you can’t always, sometimes you have to such it up and pay the bills…

    I just found your blog and I am glad I did! I’ve been trying for years to get managers and leaders to see things from the Gen Y perspective, not just their own. I think a lot of “old school” managers rally against your outlook because it’s outside of their norm and they can’t see that things CAN be different. Things will only stay the same if we let them… and it doesn’t seem like you will let them! Thanks for that!

    I saw that you started following my blog today – very cool. I was just curious: how did you find it? what did you find interesting about it such that you wanted to follow it?

    I like what you are trying to do in helping your peers adapt to the demands of the workplace. I’m a ‘Gen-Xer’ who teaches “Gen-Yers’ and I often feel concerned about a perceived lack of preparedness for ‘the real world.’ I hope your writings are helpful to many!

    Great Blog. I’m really enjoying the articles. Your latest post on working with older workers was slightly – ouch seeing as I’m a bit older. I had to laugh though because what you said about how to work with older people is true (especially making them feel like they are smart or are teaching you something). :)

    I absolutely LOVE your blog. I agree 100% wholeheartedly to every single post you have written. It is extremely challenging to enter the workforce and build up the same experience our older counterparts were able to secure easily and quickly. Interest rates are not the same, regulations are stricter, companies are not hiring, and we are all yearning to learn more and gain more experience.

    Do you find Millennials walk around calling themselves that? I don’t recall Gen X’ers going into work discussing all the articles about themselves…but now that there seems to be so much about Gen Y’s in the workplace I’ve begun to pay attention. Although I still just think of them as young workers vs. some moniker, I noticed
    1. They have no attention to detail…none
    2. They produce work that’s “good enough”
    3. They don’t take constructive criticism from any age well

    But I am only sterotyping…or is that what monikers such as Gen Y are for?

    I think its great you are giving voice to your thoughts, as you empower Gen Y.

    Being referred to as a Baby-Boomer, and a mother of a Gen Y adult, I can write stories of first hand experiences where many of my generational peers have expressed,and exhibited in the work environment out of fear of being replaced, some ruthless tactics toward many Gen Y’s that have taken a job in their workplace.

    It has been to the extend they wield their positional power, using the work-at-will law to fire a person, often younger. They’ve gone as far as commenting with an attitude of “they’re young they have no responsibilities.” It’s a flipping shame to hear of so many Gen Y’s graduated with their degree and in debt, to have so many doors closed in their face.

    I’ve found it’s never been what you know, but who you know, and even more so now. The Industrial age has flown the coup, with many parents without advice or an understanding of what or how to advise, to find themselves at a lost, to only refer to saying…. “well in my day….”

    The BS is exactly that! For some of my generational peers, they are finding it incomprehensible to imagine themselves having to be accountable to a “younger mind, new ideas and knowledge of technology.” They resist the idea to even venture into ANY thought of taking advice from a Gen Y ‘s perspective. I have a tremendous respect for those of the Gen Y that conquer through such retaliation of any kind from older coworkers. Am I saying it’s acceptable. No!

    To others, the Gen Y appears to look like they are lost. Like any other generation before whether remembered as bad or good, Gen Y, is evolving also at their pace in each experience, as they find value and direction in life. Does the sabotaging attitudes towards them of the previous generations help. Nope.

    Thank you for the follow, as I follow, sharing and learning with so many minds in this blogosphere. I am happy to be a part of this evolving Generation Y, as I see more come to choose to explore their creativity in innovations that have enhanced their life experiences and others.

    Very interesting blog. As a 24 year old in the work place I definitely understand some of your issues and the whole Gen Y in the workforce thing. I like to work work work but I am at a point in my life where I am in process of getting to where I want to be. Now that is the hard part….waiting and working and thinking your life is going by without you doing what you are to do. But then I realize hey we have all sorts of time!

    I’m so happy to find your blog as I believe we have so much in common! I remember feeling so lost after I graduated, I had this idea of how my life would be when I finally graduated and then nothing happened. =( It was hard.

    I decided to take time off and reevaluate myself and my life, and what I wanted from it. I decided that I was going to be happy and in order for me to remain happy, I needed to have a career with work/life/balance so I applied to grad school for mental health counseling and I got in. =)

    That was over a year ago, and I even though I enjoy school, I still feel clueless as to where do I go next. Hmm. So, I started my blog to hopefully find it. =) Thank you for finding me and introducing me to your beautifully written blog. I’m sure I’ll gain a lot of knowledge from it!

    I enjoy your writing—good job. With 40 years between us, I marvel at the similarity of our thoughts. I have read articles expounding the idea that the boomer and Gen Y’s have more in common than Gen y’s and their parents. I know I, and many of my baby-boomer friends, believe, in most cases, a job is only a means to an end; you have to take time for yourself, family and friends; and there is an obligation to give back—sound familiar?

    My wife and I facilitate a group of Gen Y’s involved in family businesses. In their round table discussions, we are struck at how they echo the sentiments we were expressing at the same time in life.

    Keep it up. I believe yours are good and correct beliefs; and you express them well.
