Why I Started A Facebook Group

I stared a brand new Facebook Group last week, and it’s kind of been the best thing ever. The Gen Y Girl Career Advice Group has been open for a little over 10 days and we’ve already reached 120+ members. So I figured I’d let you guys know a little bit about WHY I created a Facebook Group and why I think these groups are pretty awesome.

It’s a place where we can discuss a specific topic

If you ask me what my blog “niche” is, I’d tell you that I’m a millennial career and lifestyle blogger. I write about career stuff, but I also write about life in your twenties and everything you need to know to be a successful adult. That being said, writing about the workplace has always been my passion, so I love that this group is all about sharing career advice. Not everyone who reads my blog wants to discuss the corporate world, but for those people who DO, the group is a great place to do that.

There are TONS of Facebook Groups about blogging and makeup and a whole bunch of other topics, but there aren’t a whole lot of groups devoted to talking about careers. So my group is a place where we can network and share fun workplace memes and really help each other succeed in our careers.

Better engagement + community

I’m gunna tell you something that’ll probably get me in trouble for saying it, but I’m the WORST at replying to blog comments. I fully own that and I’m sorry. But for some reason I absolutely LOVE engaging within the group. It’s a weird feeling but I feel really close to the people engaging in the group. I feel like we’re all friends, we’re a big family, and I find it so much easier to reply to comments and have conversations in the group.

PLUS, I’ve been going LIVE in the group. I’ve made it my goal to do weekly Facebook Live sessions and man, it’s been fucking scary. There’s no other way to say it. I’ve spoken in front of hundreds of people, but there’s something about Facebook Live that gets to me. Regardless, I’ve been pushing myself WAY out of my comfort zone and going live in the group, and that kind of engagement is what I’ve always wanted to have with my readers.

It’s a safe space where we can share our thoughts

The internet is definitely not private. And sometimes, I think we’re kind of scared to share our thoughts about things in fear that the wrong people may see them. But in a private Facebook group, the conversation is only available to the group members. That’s one of the reasons why I’ve chosen to do Facebook Live sessions in the group. I could do Facebook Live on my regular Facebook page, but I don’t want to. I feel more comfortable going live in front of a smaller audience, one that’s genuinely interested in talking about career stuff.

It’s an awesome way to network online

When I started the group, I wanted to find a way to help people network online. The group is a great place to meet all kinds of people from all over the world and to learn about their careers and the things they’re up to. We don’t do enough networking, mostly because networking tends to be a little awkward. But when you’re in a Facebook group, you’re part of a community and it’s a great opportunity to get to know other people. It’s a little less stressful and a lot more fun.

We’re making new friends + forming a support system

I said it already, but this Facebook Group is a community. It’s a community of like-minded girl bosses (and guy bosses) who are interested in sharing career advice. I feel like I already have over a hundred new friends and essentially, what we’re forming here is an awesome support system. We’re cheering each other on, congratulating each other on our career successes, and who couldn’t use some positivity like that?

Anyway, I’m super happy that I decided to form the group, and I look forward to seeing it grow!

So if you’re looking for a place to discuss all things career-related, I’d love for you to join! It’s totally free, a whole lot of fun, and a great way for me to get to know each of you a whole lot better!

What do you guys think? Are these Facebook Groups totally lame or do you like them? Let me know in the comments!
