My Top 5 Most Valuable Possessions
We live in a world of stuff.
We buy things, then we buy more things, but which ones are worth the most to us?
I mean think about it – if your house was burning down and you had only 10 minutes to run inside and save 5 items from your home, what would you go for?
The painting hanging over your bed? Your 60-inch plasma? Your family scrapbook?
What would you have a hard time living without?
Allstate recently conducted a survey to figure out what Americans valued most, and the results were pretty interesting.
Among the top 5 most valuable possessions were people’s homes, family keepsakes, personal technology, vehicles, and entertainment devices.
Guess we really can’t live without our phones and TVs these days!
But what I thought was most interesting was that although a person’s age played a role in how they valued their stuff, the top 5 things that people valued were pretty consistent among all age groups.
So maybe we’re a bit more similar than most people care to admit.
Seeing the results of this survey made me think about what I value the most, so here’s my list. Here are the 5 things that are most important to me.
1. My Engagement Ring
All of my jewelry is super important to me because most of it has sentimental value of some sort. But the most valuable to me is my engagement ring because I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned it on the blog, but my engagement ring belonged to Joe’s mom. Yep, it’s a family heirloom and it’s really special, so I’d be absolutely devastated if something happened to it.
2. My Computer & External Hard Drive
As a blogger, this is my lifeline right here. I have so much information on these two things, so without them, I’d be lost in the world. It’s kind of crazy how much we rely on our computers these days, but I’ll be the first to admit that my computer is almost an extension of me. You’ll never find me without it.
3. My Scrapbooks
Yea I’m a big sucker for stuff like this, so up there on my list of valuables are the scrapbooks I’ve made for Joe over the years. I also have boxes filled with movie stubs and concert tickets, all things that I hope to be able to show my kids one day, so I definitely wouldn’t want anything to happen to them.
4. My House
I absolutely love my house. It’s the most expensive thing I own, and it means a lot to Joe and I, given that it’s our first home. We watched it being built from the ground up, and I’ll never forget how excited we were those days leading up to our move-in date. Our house is more than just walls and concrete filled with stuff, though. To me it represents hope, and love and a future with someone I love like crazy. You see… I told you I was a sucker for sentimental stuff like that.
5. My Car
Also on my list of valuables is my car. I’ve driven Volkswagen Jettas since I started driving, but up until a year ago, they were always leased. My current Jetta is the first car I financed, so in four years I’ll officially be able to say that I OWN a car. I like to think of it as my first big-girl purchase, a right of passage into adulthood, and without it, I’d be in really bad shape because living in Miami, you have to drive just about everywhere!
So how about you? What are YOUR most valuable possessions? Take a few minutesto think about it, and then let us know in the comments! I’m curious to see if your top things match up with the results of Allstate’s survey!
